Don’t miss the part of this newsletter where I plug my new writing gig at Go Magazine !!!!

Tonight, Thursday, May 30th, 9 pm at 354 Metropolitan Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11211

Hi y’all,

Hope you’re well!! I’m not :/ unfortunately, I have been banished to my bedroom with a cold, which is the most embarrassing/inconvenient thing that can happen to anyone over the age of 21.

It’s so funny to me that when I was a kid in school, I would do anything to feel this way (or pretend to), just so I could get a day at home in bed, pretty much up until college when I realized you could just skip your classes and your mom wouldn’t find out. I feel like I wished upon an eyelash or on 11:11 so many times as a kid to get sick so that I could miss school, and for some wicked reason, the wish bank didn’t get to my request until adulthood and now they consistently cash in these old requests every 8 months or so.

Does anyone else feel like they get imposter syndrome about being sick? Every time I have a cold, I feel as though I’m taking advantage of the kindness people are offering me, and I am not that sick even though my mucus will be brown, and my eyes will be deep-dish crusted shut. It’s not missed on me that this is completely a result of capitalism and “hustle/grind” culture that makes us feel like we’re lame little babies for not going to work when we’re sick. And not to mention, in turn, with many jobs, aka every job I’ve ever had, you lose money when you can’t go to work. But then, ALSO, following COVID culture, if you DO cough at work, everyone pulls out a knife and stabs you as a sacrifice to the gods of health so there’s really no win here.

I do think it’s funny that our jobs have become so powerful in society that we’re literally doubting our bodily functions because of the urge to clock in. You know when you really have to pee but you’re almost done sending an email, so you keep writing it with your legs crossed? That’s hilarious. I wish everyone could be released of that burden, and when we have to go to the bathroom, we think “Go piss girl,” instead of “Wait I’m almost done writing this meeting summary for Kathy.”

I am definitely really disappointed to be sick this time around because I’ve just begun an awesome writing gig at GoMagazine, (you can read my first article here!!!!!) and I don’t want to be more behind because I literally slept for 48 hours. I am also really upset to be missing you guys at my favorite show, Drule comedy tonight- but rest assured, my favorite queer host, Marisa Riley will have you guys in good hands tonight, so please please please enjoy the show, I love you, and I’ll see you next week!!

Love, Claire
